After seven years in the South African military I went back to uni and trained as a photojournalist. My first permanent journo job was at SA4x4 Magazine where I became their Bush Editor. What does a Bush Editor do? He takes the latest 4x4 and heads off into the bush really. I spent a decade at the magazine and during that time I visited over 45 countries, of which most were in Africa.
The best trip in my time at the magazine was when myself and three mates drove a new Pajero to East Africa and explored some of the parks there, we also crossed Lake Victoria and saw the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. The scariest part of that trip was rafting the Nile in Uganda. The rapids were rather large.
I then swapped sunny Cape Town for brilliant Bedfordshire in the UK and today I am the editor of Land Rover Monthly magazine. I love nothing more than visiting a remote part of our beautiful planet in a comfortable Land Rover. The biggest difference between exploring the northern and southern hemispheres is without a doubt the temperatures!
My daily driver is a 1998 Defender 110 2.8i, which has a factory-fitted BMW M52 engine. I like to keep things simple on expedition, if I can BBQ and have something cold to drink then I am happy. Having said that my 110 is pretty well kitted out for an overland expedition.

Nick Vass is a marine surveyor, sailing instructor, yachting historian and journalist. Nick bought his first yacht, a Hurley 20, in 1983 at the age of just eighteen. This was followed by a Hurley 24/70 ‘Omega’ in 1986 which was kept for 22 years followed by a Poncin Harmony 34 which Nick and Natasha bought new in 2008.
Nick is a fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, a member of the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors and is an MCA approved Certifying Authority commercial code of practice Examiner. He holds a degree in mechanical engineering and a diploma in marine surveying specialising in yacht and small craft systems and engine surveys.
As most yachts motor cruisers and narrowboats have a diesel cabin heating system Nick has become used to inspecting installations. He has seen good, bad and ugly installations and can tell you what makes are found to work the most consistently and what makes tend not to start up. He is also qualified to check LPG gas installations and knows how to identify faults associated with exhaust leaks and fumes.
Nick has inspected many yachts and boats that are fitted with Planar heaters and found that every single one has worked perfectly and all owners have been very pleased with them. Nick has remarked that Planar heaters have a quality and robust feel and ancillary components such as hoses and ducting that come with the units are of high quality. By comparison Nick has found other makes to be unreliable and Chinese makes to be flimsy and supplied with shoddy parts.
After studying mechanical engineering in Plymouth he worked for various yacht builders, building and repairing sailing cruisers. Nick was a Design Technology teacher for fifteen years, most of that time he was head of department. He has been a full time marine surveyor since 2004 travelling the world inspecting yachts and boats. He is also a delivery skipper and holds the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Coastal Skipper instructor qualifications.
Nick sails with his wife Natasha and children Daniel and Emma along the south coast of the UK plus Brittany and Normandy.

We are Rhys and Niamh and welcome to our world of Zora.
We started our boat renovation journey nearly three ago with a dream of sailing our way around the world. While many people think sailing is all smooth seas, sunshine, sunsets, and beautiful beaches, it’s also a lot of hard work and can be incredibly challenging, we have laughed, cried and questioned a lot of our decisions within these past few years , but we wouldn’t change a thing and we hope you continue your journey along with us as we near the final few months of our boat renovation. It cannot be denied that sailing the world increases our knowledge and widens our perspective. To view new customs, different ways of living and other lifestyles is fantastic for the mind and soul. We cannot wait to travel the seas and follow the path that the wind will take us.
We are excited and we hope you are to.
